Turning decline into electoral urgency
Editorial interpretation: the last-chance narrative puts the audience under pressure. Dividing workers from beneficiaries then gives resentment a target. This framing encourages support based on a desire for protection before policies are compared.
Put bluntly. Fear can do the work a policy platform should do. Pointing to people supposedly taking advantage of you can turn anger into support without demonstrating that the policies will solve the problem.
The question to check. Ask for time-series data, competing explanations and the expected results of each policy. An alarming diagnosis proves neither its cause nor the effectiveness of the remedy.
